RACEGUY Recovers

If You Build It...

If you believe the movie line, they will come. That wasn't the way things went down this weekend as Jeremy Wallace turned over the results of his sweat, suffering, and cubic $$$ to riders of the CMRC Atlantic region.

Of course, I have a lot more to say here, but I will place the priority on getting you the outcome of today's racing at Mt. Thom. I also have raw results from Mill Hill that I will calculate and get up at the Pts-Atlantic tab as soon as humanly possible. Stand by.

  1. Since I am kind of on the outside looking in, I hope the promoters/organizers take time to read this. If you want to grow the sport from a spectator point of view, I see several hurdles. For one, if you aren't a rider, or family of a rider, the day is far too long. OK for a single guy with no comittments but for a family, especially with small children, you either have to miss half the day by coming late or you'll end up leaving early. Either there are far too many classes or the motos are too long.

It also seems as though every event is a stand alone deal. Very little promotion seems to be done for individual races and I'd wager most non-rabid MX fans have no idea there even is an Atlantic series. I think you really need to decide is this a sport just for the people who participate or do you care about growing the sport from a fan perspective?

Last, for now, I have to speak to the riders. I don't think you realize what's involved in creating track facilities and trying to promote the races. The disappointing show of number for the event at that beautiful new Mount Thom track should serve as a caution to all. You either want an Atlantic series or you're just as happy to have one or two events here and then you'll have to haul your ass to Quebec or New England if you plan to race regularly. If you think you can just pick and choose where you are going to show up you're sorely mistaken. I don't know how any successful sport could manage if their athletes only showed up when it suited them. Imagine the level of community support for a pro team who couldn't actually field a team during exhibition because most players decided not to show up because the team gets no points for exhibitions. If you aren't part of the solution, you are the problem.

Having been involved with several types of racing over the years I do know one thing. Racers and their families are the whiniest group in any sport. The promotors and officials are there because you need them. They also need you, but in a more cooperative fashion.

Just my opinion, but these are things that need to be worked on. You either want to grow or you're going to go. Hopefully, rather than creating obstacles, you'll find a way to work together to remove some of them.

  2. Give Jeremy a points race and let the riders decide. High school graduation season thrown in the mix between 2 back to back points races does not make for a promising turnout. The odds were against the facility all week regarding the weather and the busy schedules our families live in during that time of year. Wait until next year and see what we are going to have for a turnout at the facility. Nationals will be there, its only a matter of time. Jeremy's hard work will not go un-noticed.
Basically every time a rider finishes there they are smiling from ear to ear. The track is amazing, and we do not want to see it disappear.
